The name 'Selenite' derives from the Greek goddess Selene, the goddess of the moon. It's also called the Satin Spar, Maria Glass, or Desert Rose. Desert Rose Selenite, like all other forms of Gypsum, are formed by the evaporation of ancient oceans. Due to its low solubility, Gypsum was typically the first mineral formed and it can take a variety of shapes from dazzling white sand dunes to fragile Desert Rose to shimmering Selenite. Desert Roses form as rosettes, or rose-shaped.
